The air around us is essential for life, yet it is constantly affected by both natural processes and human activities. While Earth’s atmosphere protects us and helps regulate climate, pollutants can change the air’s quality and harm people, plants, animals, and ecosystems. Some air pollution comes from natural sources such as wildfires, dust storms, and volcanic eruptions, but most modern air pollution is caused by humans. Environmental science helps us understand what air pollution is, where it comes from, how it moves through the atmosphere, and why it matters.
