What is Citizenship?

Citizenship means being a member of a community that has rules and a government. Citizens have certain rights, freedoms, and responsibilities that help their nation function well.

People can become citizens in several ways:

A citizen is a native or naturalized person who owes allegiance to a specific nation and is entitled to its government’s protection.

Good citizenship happens when citizens do their part, and the government does its part, creating a healthy balance for the whole community.

Quick Watch: What Does Citizenship Really Mean!

United States Citizenship

Citizens are expected to follow the law, pay taxes, and help their country when needed. In return, the government provides safety, public services, and protects people’s property. In the United States, citizens also have important rights:

These rights come with responsibilities. For example, having the right to a fair trial means citizens may be called to serve on a jury. Having the right to vote means staying informed about issues and candidates. Because our government depends on the participation of its citizens, Americans need to understand and use their rights to help keep them strong.
