The trail safety test requires Scouts to demonstrate trail safety, etiquette, and technical skills. In requirement 3 of the Cycling merit badge, Scouts learn how to recognize the technical skills needed when encountering uneven terrain, obstacles, and other potential dangers when mountain biking. Scouts will also learn how to properly share the path with other trail users, along with strategies for safe decision-making and hazard mitigation. Scouts will develop awareness of proper trail etiquette and the importance of riding predictably, being conspicuous, thinking ahead, and staying ready, which are essential behaviors for maintaining safety and respect on shared trails during the safety test.
Read through the requirement and materials entirely.
Make a checklist of each handling skill.
Use your troop meetings, campouts, or outdoor time to practice the handling skills.
Practice with a sibling, parent, or guardian at home.
Make sure you have all items needed to perform the handling skills test.
