Declaration of Independence

Discover the Events That Sparked the Declaration of Independence!

The Declaration of Independence is the United States of America’s birth certificate.

The Second Continental Congress asked Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Robert Livingston, and Roger Sherman to draft a statement of independence. Influenced by John Locke’s ideas of natural rights and Rousseau’s concept of majority rule, Jefferson wrote that people have the right to dissolve political ties and form their own government. After debate and compromise, Congress adopted the Declaration on July 4, 1776.

Understanding the Importance of the Declaration of Independence

The Declaration of Independence: Five Main Components

1. Preamble to the Constitution (Introduction)

The preamble is the introduction to the Constitution. Only one sentence long, the preamble states the six reasons for creating the document that embodies the basic principles and laws of the United States.

2. Statements of Human Rights

A series of “self-evident” truths about the rights of individuals and the principles of government to which the people were committed.

3. List of Grievances

A list of 27 specific complaints about King George III that violated the colonist’s rights.

4. Statements of Grievances

A summary of the efforts the colonists made to avoid a break with England.

5. Declaration of Independence

A declaration that the 13 colonies are “free and independent” states, completely separate from Great Britain.
