Special Call Signs

If you have an existing amateur radio call sign for your Scout camp or a club call sign, you’ll no doubt want to use that call sign for your event. However, special ham radio call signs can also be used for your JOTA event or other Radio Scouting events. Two possibilities are the 1×1 call signs or the K2BSA call sign that has been in operation at national Scouting America events, including the jamboree.

To use either of these call signs, you’ll need to request their use for the dates of your event and receive permission prior to the event.

For K2BSA, you can make the request at https://k2bsa.net/

For 1×1 call signs, such as K3S, you can make the request at www.1x1callsigns.org/.

Both sites offer further insight into the use of the call signs.

Station Registration

We would appreciate you registering your station so you can indicate to Scouts world-wide that you’ll be on the air. Registration will also provide you with information from the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) about the event, including updates nearer to JOTA weekend.

The link for the WOSM registration system won’t be available until September. You can watch for the announcement at the WOSM JOTA-JOTI website http://jotajoti.info

We also look forward to seeing your station report after the JOTA weekend. You can learn more about station report best practices at https://k2bsa.net/jota-station-reports-best-practices/.

HOUSTON, WE HAVE A FREQUENCY!

DFW Boy Scouts to Speak With NASA Astronaut on Board International Space Station Using Amateur Radio

 WHAT

Scouting America is hosting the 60th Annual JOTA/JOTI (Jamboree-on-the-Air and Jamboree-on-the-Internet) Extravaganza at the National Scouting Museum in Irving, Texas. Scouts from all over North Texas are invited to share ideas and Scouting experiences with their Scouting peers around the world using two-way amateur radio and satellite links as well as the Internet.

The National Scouting Museum has been selected to be the only JOTA/JOTI location in the world that will enable local Scouts to communicate directly with NASA astronaut Jeff Williams, a former Star Scout who is currently on board the International Space Station. This communication will be relayed live to all other JOTA stations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area using two-way amateur radio connection

The JOTA/JOTI annual event contributes to better understanding and mutual respect between youngsters in different countries. Thousands of amateur radio stations around the world participate.

 WHY:

More than 500,000 Scouts in 100 countries from Algeria to Zimbabwe participate in JOTA each year, but the Dallas-Fort Worth Scouts have the unique opportunity to communicate with U.S. astronauts in space. The event is open to all Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturers, and adult leaders, family, and friends.
