Cub Scouts will create a trail mix using three different foods that are naturally different in colors. These foods will consist of protein, vegetables, fruit, dairy, and a grain.

Choose three different foods that that are three different colors:

  • Sharpie
  • 1 zip-top quart bag per Cub Scout
  • 1 Sets of measuring cups (1 cup, ½ cup, ¼ cup and 1 tablespoon) per 2-3 Cub Scouts
  • ¾ Cup Sunflower seeds per 8 Cub Scouts
  • 2 cups Yogurt Covered Raisins per 8 Cub Scouts
  • 2 Cups Dried cranberries per 8 Cub Scouts
  • 4 Cups Cheerios per 8 Cub Scouts
  • 4 Cups root vegetable chips per 8 Cub Scouts

Before the Meeting

  1. Review the medical forms to make sure you understand any food allergies/sensitivities.
  2. Purchase items for trail mix.
  3. Pre-portion ingredients into bowls labeled “Grain (Cheerios),” “Fruit (dried cranberries),” “Dairy (yogurt covered raisins),” “Vegetables (root Vegetable Chips),” and “Protein (Sunflower Seeds).”

 

During the Meeting

  1. Gather Cub Scouts and explain that you are making a trail mix that includes at least three foods that are naturally the color that they see.
  2. Ask Cub Scouts which foods do they think are naturally the color that they see.
  3. Provide each Cub Scout with a zip-top bag.
  4. Ask Cub Scouts to write their name on their bag.
  5. Direct each Cub Scout to scoop 1/2 cup of Cheerios into their bag.
  6. Next have each Cub Scout Scoop ½ cup of Root Vegetable Chips into their bag.
  7. Instruct Cub Scouts to scoop ¼ cup of yogurt covered raisins and dried cranberries into their bag.
  8. Finally, have Cub Scouts put 1 tablespoon of sunflower seeds into their bags.
  9. After making their trail mix, have Cub Scouts eat the trail mix so they can try items that are naturally three different colors.

 

After the Meeting

  1. Clean up the meeting space.
