Supply List

  • 3 – ½ gallon plastic milk jugs
  • 6 cups of sand
  • 6” playground ball
  • Scorecard(s) found in Additional Resources (1 sheet per 4 players)
  • Pencil, one for each player
  • 60-yard roll of 1-inch blue painter’s tape

Objective

Score as many points as possible in 10 turns (frames).

Set-Up

Use a flat and level playing area that is 30 feet x 10 feet.  With the blue painter’s tape, mark out the bowling lane.  Use small 1-inch x 1-inch pieces of tape to mark three spots in a triangle at the far end of the lane where the pins will be set up.  The pins should be set up 6 inches apart.

To make the pins, fill each of the ½ gallon plastic milk jugs with 2 cups of sand.

Test the pins by setting them up and rolling the playground ball at them.  Pins should stand on their own but should fall over when directly hit by the ball.  Adjust the sand in the pins as necessary. Younger players will want lighter pins, older players will want heavier pins.

Directions

Set up three “pins” made from the ½ gallon milk jugs in the triangle that was marked with the painter’s tape.  Each player gets two rolls per turn (“frame”) to knock down the pins.  A player receives four points for knocking the headpin down and three points for either of the back pins.  If the player knocks all the pins down on their first roll, that is a “strike” and is marked on the scorecard with an “X”;  this counts as 10 points, plus the points the player gets on their next turn (2 rolls) “frame”.  If the player does not knock down all the pins on their first roll but does so on their second roll, that is a “spare” and is marked on the scorecard with a “/”; this counts as 10 points plus the points the player gets on their first roll of their next turn (“frame”).

The person who has the most points after 10 turns (frames) wins.
