Directions

Before the meeting:

  1. Clear an area large enough for the entire group to move safely.

During the meeting:

  1. Explain the activity. “Our Pack is like a bag of popcorn:  full of energy and fun!  But to keep the popcorn popping, we have to work together.”  The goal is to keep the balloon from touching the ground using only gentle taps with the hands or arms (no catching, grabbing, or spiking).
  2. Have everyone stand in a loose circle — not too close.
  3. Say, “Popcorn, POP!” and let the group begin. The leader tosses a balloon into the air towards the middle of the circle.
  4. Remind everyone to cheer for each other and help teammates who need encouragement by saying things like “nice save” and “keep it up”.
  5. Encourage cooperation and communication. If someone struggles, remind the group the goal is to help everyone succeed.  If a balloon touches the ground, no problem — everyone shouts, “POP!” And tosses it back up together.
  6. Celebrate Success. When the balloons remain in the air after multiple passes, have the group cheer!
  7. Try again and see if the group can improve their teamwork. Add more balloons one at a time.  Everyone works together to keep all the popcorn popping at once.
  8. Remember, the fun is in the organized chaos and teamwork, not perfection.
  9. After a few minutes of play, gather everyone in a circle and say:  “Did you notice how everyone had to work together to keep the popcorn in the air? That’s how our Cub Scout Pack works — we help each other, lift each other up, and keep the fun going!”
