Supply List

  • Brown paper lunch bags (1 per Cub Scout)
  • Blank copy paper, cut in half length-wise (3 half sheets per Cub Scout)
  • Markers
  • Yarn (1 foot per Cub Scout)
  • Hole punch
  • Ruler
  • Scissors

Objective

Set-Up

  1. Create journals for each Cub Scout. Cut the blank copy paper in half length-wise.
  2. Do not open the bag, have them keep it flat. Fold the lunch bag in half from top to bottom.  The paper lunch bag will act as the front and back cover of the adventure notebook.
  3. Take three half sheets of blank copy paper. Fold the papers in half from top to bottom.
  4. Enclose the folded blank sheets of paper between the folded lunch bag “cover”, making a notebook.
  5. Using a hole punch, make two holes along the folded edge of the bag. Make sure to punch through the paper lunch bag and all the blank sheets inside.
  6. Measure one foot of string.
  7. String through the two holes and tie the string to securely bind the notebook.
  8. Arrange drawing supplies and journals so they are easily accessible for Cub Scouts as they enter the meeting space.

Directions

  1. Explain the activity.  Everyone is going to make their own adventure notebook to begin recording their adventures in Cub Scouting.
  2. Ask Cub Scouts to decorate the cover of their adventure notebook. Ask them to include their name.
  3. Give Cub Scouts time to add illustrations or notes to the pages of their adventure notebook. Some suggested entry topics include:
    • Draw a picture of a friend you met tonight.
    • Write or draw a picture of an activity you are looking forward to doing in Cub Scouts.
    • Draw a picture of something fun you did today.
    • Write or draw a picture of a way you were helpful today.
