Before the meeting:

  1. Contact your local police station. Request an officer to visit during a den meeting to talk to Cub Scouts in the 1st grade about personal safety.
  2. Share the Protect Yourself Rules – Tigers video with the visiting officer and ask them to review Shout, Run, Tell with the Cub Scouts.
  3. Remind Cub Scouts and adult partners that they need to watch the Protect Yourself Rules – Tigers before the meeting so they are prepared.

During the meeting:

  1. Introduce the police officer to the Cub Scouts
  2. Explain to the Cub Scouts that they will be learning about personal safety.
  3. Have the police officer review Shout, Run, Tell: Shout – yell “Stop!”, Run – get away from the danger, Tell – tell a trusted adult what happened.
  4. Have the Cub Scouts practice Shout, Run, Tell with their adult partner.
  5. If there is time, ask the police officer to talk about calling 911, as well as what to do if the Cub Scouts get lost.
  6. Give Cub Scouts a chance to ask questions.
  7. Have everyone say “Thank you!”

After the meeting

  1. Write and send a thank you note to the police officer.
