  • Small sticks, enough to share
  • 5 lb. container of air-dry clay
  • Plastic knives, one for each Cub Scout
  • Scissors
  • Fishing magazines

Before the meeting:

  1. Become familiar with the location and the type of fish the den will be fishing for their trip.
  2. Prepare the meeting location so Cub Scouts can complete the activity.
  3. Place the colored paper, magazines, scissors, glue sticks, and fish printouts onto the working surface before the meeting starts.

During the meeting:

  1. Explain to Cub Scouts they will be creating a diorama, which is a model of a fish’s environment.
  2. Review with the Cub Scouts the location you will be fishing at. Review with them the type of fish they will be fishing for and what their habitat is like and where they are most likely to be caught.
  3. Have Cub Scouts build a diorama based on the information you shared, that is the body of water you are going to fish at and at least one example of where the fish might be found. For example, they may make a lake that has a fallen log or a pier.
  4. When everyone is finished creating their diorama, Cub Scouts share their environments with the den.
