Position Overview

The Camp Ranger is a key member of Scouting’s camping team, providing onsite management and maintenance of camp facilities and properties. This full-time position is responsible for seasonal and year-round maintenance, health and safety, security, and program support duties, as required.

We are seeking a live-on-property Camp Ranger that has general knowledge in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, vehicle maintenance, and general handyman skills. This person must be a problem solver, able to work under minimal supervision.

Schedule:

  • Work schedule varies weekly dependent on camp usage and maintenance needs
  • A combination of day, night, and weekend shifts required
  • Some holiday shifts may be required
Responsibilities

Property Responsibilities

  • Live on site and patrol property as necessary for safety and service.
  • Supervise and facilitate property use.
  • Ensure all physical property and equipment is maintained, in operational condition, and good appearance, being particularly alert to conditions which could affect health, safety, sanitation, and good organization of the camp.
  • Develop and follow project schedules for regular inspections to determine essential repairs, routine maintenance, operational procedures, and ordering supplies as approved by supervisor.
  • Maintain current and historical documentation of all repairs conducted at camp.
  • Maintain the general appearance of camp by completing on a regular or as needed basis: mowing; tree trimming or removal; trail and road maintenance; repair and maintenance (carpentry & plumbing skills); and other general maintenance.
  • Monitor and operate as necessary the equipment associated with onsite facilities including water well, treatment, and distribution system; aerobic septic systems; and swimming pool.
  • Monitor and control the feral hog population, engaging as necessary USDA services for wildlife damage management.
  • Provide care, maintenance, and control of firearms and archery equipment and onsite target ranges.
  • Coordinate and supervise, when necessary, the activities of volunteers, contractors, and service companies regarding the use, repair, maintenance, or visitation of all property and facilities.
  • Participate in annual inspections/evaluations of facilities and properties.
  • Ensure adherence to Scouting America National Camp Standards and applicable county and state regulations.
  • Complete training and maintain certifications as directed by supervision, including Scouting Camp Ranger Basic and Chainsaw, ROHVA Trainer, Texas Food Manager, and Texas Water System Operator.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Customer Service Responsibilities

  • Provide excellent customer service to all internal and external stakeholders who use the property.
  • Cooperate closely with seasonal camp directors and their staff to provide a quality program and safe camp experience for youth and adult participants.
  • Cooperate closely with council properties committee, health and risk committee, and subcommittees.
  • Maintain harmonious relationships with local officials and governmental services, adjoining landowners and neighboring communities.
  • Represent the council well in contact with visitors and be able to communicate effectively while enforcing the established council policies and procedures.

Business Responsibilities

  • Comply with established council business procedures including bookkeeping of petty cash, credit card log, reconciliation of camp reports, deposits, purchase orders and retaining business records.
  • Register as an adult member of Scouting America. Subscribe to and live by tenets embodied in Scout Oath and Scout Law.
Competencies

Working Relationships, Supervision, Volunteer Relations

  • Recognize the importance of a good working relationship with other staff members and the importance of a close and harmonious working relationship with all volunteers.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers.
  • Prior Scouting experience and Volunteer recruitment skills a plus.
Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Technical college education is preferred.
Qualifications
  • Attained 21 years of age or older.
  • Physically and mentally fit.
  • Personal habits that reflect Scouting’s best interests.
  • Financial and personal integrity.
  • Basic fiscal management and budget development skills.
  • Facilities management experience is preferred.
  • Successful experience in property administration.
  • Maintenance and/or property management skills.
  • Organizational skills and proven ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of safe handling, cleaning of firearms a plus.
  • Knowledge of electrical, HVAC a plus.
  • Knowledge of welding and cutting equipment a plus.
  • Knowledge of computers (Windows, Microsoft Office), use of email and the internet.

Salary Range: $38,000 – $42,000 per year; plus, onsite housing
