Position Overview

The Director of Membership is a professional Scouting Specialist with a consistent record of membership growth and membership campaign strategy, whose passionate overriding mission in Scouting is to train, guide, and mentor a team of membership specialists. Coaching the team in membership growth strategies and tactics, new unit development, membership renewal, cultivation and development of volunteers, and training and support of unit leaders and new member coordinators. Ultimately, the Director of Membership prepares their team for quality membership campaign performance by providing outstanding strategy, coaching, and having an attitude of servant leadership, ensuring the success of the council’s strategic plan.

Responsibilities
  1. Staff advisor for the council membership committee and all subcommittees.
  2. Meet regularly with professional membership team members through weekly check-ins on progress related to the council strategic plan as well as goals related to growth in membership in their service areas.
  3. Be the subject area expert of each phase of the membership campaign and develop and review all membership resources to guide and support the membership department and units in impactful membership growth.
  4. Help and ensure there is a plan and accountability for all membership team members to visit every unit and school in their service area about membership growth and execute all aspects of the membership plan.
  5. Work with each membership team member to ensure they are trained and supported in achieving their membership growth goals.
  6. Coach and guide team on how best to promote membership year-round through council and district programs and membership recruitment opportunities.
  7. Provide a plan and support to team in identifying potential sources of new youth members and ensure they are well trained on the council membership plan to help their units grow and to support graduating members to the next level program.
  8. Develop a plan and support the team in identifying and cultivating potential unit and district-level membership volunteers.
  9. Train and support the team to ensure on-time charter renewal of each unit by December 31st of each year.
  10. Coach and guide the team to identify opportunities in the community for potential new units, strategically target possible chartered organizations, and conduct sales efforts. efforts.
  11. Provide leadership, training, and support by being available, engaged, and present with each assigned team member. Maintain a culture of support and service.
  12. Understand each district and service area by attending key meetings with your membership team and getting to know council and district-level volunteers.
  13. Develop new and innovative ways to deliver the Scouting program to all youth in the Simon Kenton Council.
  14. Lead the membership team in advising and running the council’s annual Fretwell event honoring educators throughout Simon Kenton Council.
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
Qualifications
  • Seeking individuals who are professional in dress, well-spoken, and comfortable in social and networking settings.
  • Strong interpersonal, written communication, and verbal presentation skills
  • Ability to manage the current high-functioning multi-district or council-wide membership campaign.
  • Ability to supervise staff utilizing effective back-dating and work-planning techniques.-planning techniques.
  • Effective in managing membership and new unit organization to achieve growth on a consistent basis, with attention to retention of units and youth.
  • Ability to manage functioning districts at a high level of operation and effectively utilize the annual nominating committee process.
  • Prior experience in Scouting must include the direct supervision of one or more staff members. Must be able to effectively lead a team of professionals.

  • A flexible schedule is frequently required for evening and weekend activities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PPT) preferred.
