Position Overview

The role is in the office and based in San Jose, CA. Silicon Valley Monterey Bay Council serves 11,000 youth annually, with more than 300 units across four counties. With two incredible camp properties — Chesebrough Scout Reservation and Camp Hi-Sierra the Council provides scouts and their families with the opportunity to connect with nature, while developing the self-reliance that brings confidence.
The Director of Program selected will:
- Work with a volunteer board of directors and other community and business leaders to identify, recruit, train, guide, and inspire them to become involved in youth programs.
- Achieve progress towards specific goals and objectives, which include: program development through collaborative relationships, volunteer recruitment, and training.
- Ensure that all program sites are served through volunteers, regular leader meetings, training events, and activities.
- Collaborate with adult volunteers and oversee the achievement of training for their respective roles.
- Be a good role model and recognize the importance of working relationships with other professionals and volunteers. The executive must have communication skills and be able to explain the program’s goals and objectives to the public.
- Provide quality service through timely communication, regular meetings, training events, and activities.
- Have a willingness and ability to devote long and irregular hours to achieve council objectives.
Responsibilities
- Lead the planning, promotion, and execution of multiple summer camp operations and year-round programs.
- Provide leadership to Scouting Professionals, including a Camping Director and a Program Director, Summer Camp Directors, Rangers, and seasonal staff (full and part-time).
- With their team actively recruiting, training, and guiding a large pool of dynamic volunteers who lead over 100 council events.
- Develop and oversee annual camp operating and program budgets totaling over $1.5 million.
- Ensure all camps meet or exceed Scouting America’s National Camp Accreditation Program (NCAP) standards.
- Oversee all safety, youth protection, and risk management protocols and training.
- Implement and maintain a strategic five-year camping and program in coordination with council leadership.
- Oversee marketing and recruitment strategies to increase camp attendance and program engagement.
- Maintain and improve physical properties through collaboration with rangers, contractors, and community leaders.
- Develop new programmatic offerings and strengthen existing programs.
- Ensure accurate data tracking for attendance, program participation, and financial performance.

Education
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university (transcript with the date degree conferred stated is required for employment).
Qualifications
- Must be willing to accept and meet Scouting America’s leadership and membership standards and subscribe to the Scout Oath and Law.
- 10+ years of leadership experience in camping, outdoor programs, or youth development.
- Ability to work varied hours when necessary, evening activities, and weekend work are frequently required to achieve positive objectives.
- Ability to travel for training at least once a year for one to two weeks.
- A Scouting background is preferred but not required for employment.
- Position contingent upon earning a Scouting America Commission.

Compensation:
All councils are equal-opportunity employers. In addition to offering a competitive salary of $95,000-$130,000 annually, Professional Scouting offers benefits to include major medical, prescription coverage, dental, vision, life insurance, long-term disability, accidental death, a defined benefit retirement plan, plus compensation for authorized and approved business-related expenses to include phone at $75 monthly and mileage reimbursement at current IRS rates. We also offer a generous paid time-off policy ranging from 18 days annually for those with 3 years of service or less to 30 days annually after 5 years of service, and twelve holiday observances.
