Development Director
Position Overview
The Development Director leads Narragansett Council’s annual fundraising campaigns, including the annual Growing Leaders Campaign (GLC), donor recognition programs, special events, including a sporting clays tournament and a golf tournament, fundraising breakfasts and lunches, a Council popcorn sale, and other development efforts. This position reports to the Director of Development & CDO and works with our Development Assistant. This position is responsible for a successful annual giving campaign, selected fundraising events, donor recognition, and grant writing.

Responsibilities
- Growing Leaders/Friends of Scouting & Annual Campaigns: Identify, cultivate, and solicit existing and new major gift donors to achieve annual goals for the President’s Club Campaign, Badge Sponsorship Campaign, Event Sponsorship Campaign, and other campaigns as may be determined.
- Special Events: Direct the Council’s golf tournament, sporting clays tournament, and other events as may be determined.
- Popcorn and Product Sales: Coordinate all aspects of the Council-wide popcorn and product sale programs, including selecting volunteer leads, recruiting Units to participate, managing sales, inventory, recognition program, and other aspects of the sales.
- Foundation Grant Writing: In conjunction with the Director of Development, achieve annual foundation campaign goal through effective prospecting, research, grant writing, communication, and reporting. Maintain the Development Calendar and grant writing calendar deadlines.
- Prospect & Donor Records: Maintain accurate records of all fundraising events. Manage the accurate documentation of all prospect and donor lists, contacts, proposals, commitments, billings, correspondence, recognition, etc. Become proficient in and utilize the Council’s CRM system, Blackbaud, to document donor information and interactions.
- Donor Recognition: Manage the prompt and personalized recognition of all donors and volunteers.
- Budget: Prepare and manage special event budgets and donation goals to meet the Council’s development objectives. Manage expenses monthly to stay within limits.
- Online Fundraising, Website, & Direct Mail Campaign: Develop and maintain the council’s online fundraising tools and Development web pages. Promote online giving where appropriate. Update online presence at least annually. Administer a quarterly direct mail campaign to achieve the annual campaign goal.
- Capital Fundraising: Support, where appropriate, efforts related to capital fundraising.
- Gifts-in-Kind/Project Sales: Develop and build the donation of products and sponsorship of programs by publishing a list of projects annually, researching prospects, preparing proposals, and managing the campaign.
- Vision & Mission: Enthusiastically promote the Narragansett Council’s Vision and Mission with community members. Through personal example, help instill a passion for Scouting in others.
Qualifications
- Either an experienced event coordinator or a fundraising professional from another not-for-profit organization with a bachelor’s degree or a commissioned professional Scouter with success in Friends of Scouting campaigns and/or special events.
- Track record in achieving objectives, directing resources, planning programs and events, and setting
- Strong organizational skills and proven ability to work with minimal
- Possesses excellent communication (verbal and written) skills and is personally appealing in one-on-one
- Has executive ability, is a team player, and has the ability to work productively with the development staff and other team members.
- Ability to discipline oneself regarding time, responsibilities, and
- Proven ability to quickly learn and effectively use various software
- Must be comfortable and proficient in communicating with donors, volunteers, team members, and prospective donors via phone, virtual, text, and email.
- Has the ability to network with people, identify potential volunteers and donors, and then engage those persons with the organization, delivering results.
- Must have an automobile, a valid driver’s license, and carry auto insurance. Must be able to use own vehicle for business purposes (i.e., picking up supplies, attending meetings throughout our service territory, visiting volunteers and donors).

Hybrid work environment: All team members must have a home office and be able to work from home much of the time. New team members work for 90 days out of the Council office, then transition to a hybrid work format. A flexible work schedule allows the ability to balance work and personal life.
Based on relevant experience and a track record of success, the salary range is $50,000-$80,000, plus a monthly car allowance, business mileage reimbursement, cell phone allowance, and performance bonuses.
